Position: ASD Specialist Teaching Assistant
Location: Secondary Schools in Bury, Greater Manchester
Hours: Full-Time, Monday to Friday

Cover People UK is recruiting a dedicated and experienced ASD Specialist Teaching Assistant for full-time placements in secondary schools across Bury. In this impactful role, you’ll support students on the autism spectrum, helping them achieve their academic and personal development goals in a structured, inclusive environment. This role is perfect for someone who understands the unique needs of ASD students and is passionate about making a real difference in their education.
Key Responsibilities:

Individualized Student Support:
- Provide one-on-one assistance to ASD students, helping them engage with lessons and assignments.
- Utilize strategies and resources tailored to each student’s individual learning style and needs.
- Offer support that enhances focus, minimizes distractions, and encourages participation.

Classroom & Curriculum Adaptation:
- Collaborate with teachers to adapt lesson plans and activities, making content accessible for ASD students.
- Implement visual aids, sensory tools, and communication supports to enhance learning.
- Assist students with transitions between activities or classrooms, reducing potential stressors.

Emotional & Social Guidance:
- Create a welcoming and supportive classroom atmosphere that promotes trust, confidence, and independence.
- Support ASD students in social situations, fostering positive interactions with peers and staff.
- Help students develop coping strategies for anxiety or sensory sensitivities commonly associated with ASD.

Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), teachers, and support staff to ensure each student’s learning plan is comprehensive and effective.
- Provide regular feedback on student progress, behavior, and areas for development.
- Participate in meetings and training sessions to stay updated on best practices in ASD support.
Essential Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in any field; additional training in SEN (Special Educational Needs) or ASD support is advantageous.
- Experience: Prior experience working with ASD students or similar SEN roles within an educational setting is highly preferred.
- DBS Check: Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills to engage students and collaborate with staff.
- High levels of patience, empathy, and adaptability.
- Ability to handle challenging behaviors and create a calm, structured environment.
