Why Teach Abroad

Why Work Overseas

Teaching abroad opens the door to an exciting new world of people and cultures. Becoming a teacher with Worldwide Teaching means that you will be able to inspire people’s lives and expand your own career, adding a depth of experience that will enrich your knowledge and ability. When deciding where to teach, you should consider what's important to you, such as the type of school and location. You can also look for online forums and Facebook groups to get a feel for what different countries and education settings have to offer. In doing so, you may find other teachers willing to share their thoughts and experiences to help your decision-making easier!

There are many reasons to work overseas as a teacher, including:

  • Personal and professional growth
Teaching abroad is more than just a job. It can help you grow as a person, expanding your mind and heart and developing your self-confidence whilst also gaining professional experience and new skills. You will meet many new colleagues and friends from other countries and education systems, which will prove to be an invaluable network in the future.

Teaching overseas also speaks volumes about your curiosity and bravery and looks great on your CV, boosting your marketability. The breadth of experience gained working in different contexts will help you become more flexible and versatile in the classroom and employers will assume that you are capable and open-minded. In a competitive world, this will give you an edge over teachers who have not travelled, especially if you are looking towards roles in leadership further down the line.

  • Career progression
In some cases you can teach your whole career in a public school without many good opportunities for career progression, largely due to the size of the department and others being ‘first in line’.  Teaching abroad can be different and many private school teachers who show interest in personal growth will be given that opportunity within a shorter period. If you take these opportunities, it can also fast forward your career when you return home (if you do!! – many stay overseas).

  • New Friendships
Some of the greatest friendships are made between people of different cultural backgrounds whilst working abroad. It can be hard, and therefore brave, living in a new location where you must quickly find your feet. However, making new friends is usually easier than you think, and most people are intrigued to get to know you and share their own story. It really is a journey of huge personal growth, and it can also be great fun!

  • Visting new places and learning a language
There is no better or more affordable way to travel than a stint abroad as a teacher. Take advantage of your new location to travel between terms or roles, both within and outside the host country. Why not learn a language at the same time? There are many opportunities to take classes or learn from people you meet. This will also enhance your experience of working abroad.

  • Lower cost of living
In some countries, the cost of living is lower than in the UK. The countries may also offer a range of benefits such as free accommodation, medical cover and paid leave.  See our ‘Schools and Locations’ page for examples of what may be on offer. Salaries can vary from school to school but teaching overseas offers a chance to save money in many cases. Most overseas teaching contracts include flights, housing, medical coverage, and bonuses. In the middle east, most salaries are tax free. Most foreign countries also have a lower cost of living than North America and Europe.
